1966 Mercedes Benz OL319 Bus For Sale Front
1966 Mercedes-Benz 10 seat Luxusbus
Location:Canberra, Australia
VIN:319 074 20 001663
Chassis mileage:62275
Engine type:121 941 20 000753 (numbers-matching) with 62275 miles

How long have you had the car? Purchased by the current owner in 2004.
Describe the body condition: The biggest asset of this vehicle is the condition of the body. Removing the chequer plate on the sides revealed NO RUST. There are a lot of holes where the pop rivets were, this is a much easier repair when you look at some of the O319′s being restored in Europe.
Describe the mechanical condition: It has travelled only 62295mls from new and whilst it looks dreadful it is mechanically excellent, with very little wear. In 2005 we carried out a mechanical restoration including a brake system overhaul, reconditioned carburettor, new waterpump, new wheels and tyres and many other jobs. We have the original log books and service books.
Included documentation: Original service book, owners manuals, digital copies of dealership parts manuals, patterns for missing seats.
What makes this car special? When did you last see a genuine 10 seat Luxusbus on the road? It would be the ultimate show vehicle for a Coach company. Or maybe for a large family into Classic cars??

Asking Price: $37500.00AUD

  1. patrick-bateman!
This seller has a great reputation in the MB community in Australia. I think it would make a fab project.
  2. $39k for that? A Unimog, maybe…..
  3. Bring a Checkbook…..for the right person this looks like a great place to start. Microbus on steroids? Assuming a decent negotiation and purchase price, and comparing to some of the 6 figure VW auction results, seems like there’s money to be made here? For those who need to be just that much different, you can’t do much better….
  4. steve in podunk
Well, it’s on the other side of the World & it’s expensive but at least it’s really ugly.
  5. Bring plenty of Riccola
  6. I thought it was like pesos or something but no, that’s almost 40 grand.

I had one of these busses in the back forty for many years. I inherited my grandfathers house and property and it sat in the pathway to the top of the lot. My grandfather bought it in the mid seventys from the city of Halifax (Nova Scotia) and I think they purchased it new and had It coverted to a book mobile. as time went on and the neibours moved and new people moved in the community became more and more uptite about what somone could have in their own yard we where forced by the county to clean up the numerous old vehicles and parts up in that path. The old bus had sat for almost forty years in that spot and when we hooked onto what was left of the frame the thing just desintegrated and their was nothing but a few delaminated windows a couple of unsalvagable gauges and some badly rotted suspension and frame bits. The engine and trans had beed removed and probably Went with one of the old sedans in the eighties. I wish my grandfather had known just how rare these things were when he put it out to pasture, it may have earned a spot under the house with the other old sedans he had collected. And I could have had a very rare and cool (In my eye anyway) looking van.
  8. Are these really worth $100k when fully restored? Just because there’s few of these around does not mean that it’s worth all the money in the world. It seems that the seller is too much in love with this van and his asking price reflects it. There are so many really cool cars to be had for this sort of money… and $40k only gets you a starter project. Pass!
  9. A fully restored RV version of this bus sold from a museum in LA was offered for the same money about four years ago. One with this seating arrangement was offered out of Germany restored for six figures. 200k or so if I recall. Who knows if it sold though.

  12. This is a rare beast indeed.
My brother owns the bus that Kodak was using for VIP’s to tour their facility in Rochester, New York.
What makes this unique from other 319′s is the 11 seat luxury seats (2+3+3+3), panorama windows and the full size rag top (which seems to have been modified on this one.
The sad part is that it will be a real challenge to restore this one.
Trim pieces are virtually impossible to get, at least NOS, since MB in their infinite wisdom decided in the mid 80′s to destroy and trash all their back stock when they needed room for their W124 parts ………………
Other 319 stuff is still somewhat available in Germany but most likely getting a parts bus or 2 is the way to go. I can see a restoration easily going as high as 200k.
I think well worth it for this one unless you decide to restore aN O321 or O303, but that’s the next size up.
  13. I really enjoy these busses. Very cool. Neither the BaT write-up or the seller’s has much about the engine. I thought more than one engine was available (gas and diesel)? I have to admit, at the market price, it’s a bit rich for me; but I can see why they’re desirable for hotels, resorts, and other users who want a vintage touring vehicle.
  14. This is an O319. My wife’s family spent 20-30 years in a rare camper-converted version of one, which is now being restored in California. It had a 4-cylinder gasoline engine, so it was an O319B, for benzin. (What better fuel for a Benz!) The other version was O319D. MB advertised the B as slightly more powerful than the D. The gas engine was essentially identical to the car engine, with some altered parts to fit in the cramped engine bay. Think about how the engine for a W110 would drive a vehicle this large (duallies and all) – it was a DOG. 55 if you were heading downhill. They drove it all over the US, but they were VERY patient, and had all summer to take their vacations.
  15. so, if one had knowledge of one of these sitting in the bushes…would said one be a fool for now pursuing it?
  16. @Abe -
“…would said one be a fool for now pursuing it?”
You would be a much wiser but poorer man for doing so.
  17. “whilst it looks dreadful it is mechanically excellent”
    Great writing!

Body Type:Van
Kilometers:62275mls
Year:1966
Description:
In all the years that we have run MB Spares we have had some very special vehicles in our care, many of which we have had the privilege to own. And, whilst this unlikely looking bus from the mid 60's looks like a pile of junk to most, it is possibly the most significant vehicle we have owned. It is one of very few remaining examples of the O319 Luxusbus. Of the 961 Luxus bus's built we know of only five that have survived and only two that are registered worldwide. You can see details of these five vehicles here.
The O319 and its more heavy duty brother the L319 van, which were built from 1956-67, were a small part of the German "Economic miracle" that transformed Germany as she recovered from WW2. Today these are very collectable especially the highly optioned versions like this example.
The full story of this vehicle is documented here along with a short history on the model and an extensive picture file. The short version is that it was ordered here in Australia for delivery in Stuttgart as a RHD vehicle. It toured Europe, in style, and then returned to Australia. After several owners an attempt was made to convert it to a campervan by an owner who had no idea of the significance of the vehicle.
It is a rust free low mileage example with some great options. It has the most desirable seating options and the most desirable engine option.
Options:
- Webasto fold back sunroof
- Reclining seats
- Panorama windows
- Curtains for panorama windows
- Sliding rear windows
- Becker AM/FM radio with two speakers
- Cooling fans
- Roof rack with fold down ladder
- Canvas cover for the roof rack
- Separate heater for passengers compartment
- First aid kit
- Fire Extinguisher
- Fog lamps
- Emergency pop out rear windscreen.
Mechanically it is very good, but It does require a full body and interior restoration. Please appreciate that it would be easy for us to paint the odd coloured bits white and polish it all up so it looked better in the pictures, but we would rather present the vehicle as honestly as possible.
The vehicle will be sold with a large inventory of NOS parts that we have collected over the last 5 years. An excel spreadsheet documenting these parts is available on request.
The picture of a restored vehicle on the right (click on picture to enlarge) is of the O319 owned by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Centre in Stuttgart. I have included it as an example of what it should look like.
